The YGs

The Young Gentlemen Project: Five Tenants and Pledge

The YGs Scope and Focus: the Performing Arts Showcase and Life Skills Program provides meaningful hands-on opportunities for artistic expression through music and performing arts and is designed to initiate an effect on the lives of at-risk youths who have not been engaged in traditional educational environments with life sustaining teachings and skills that re-directs their motivation towards positive outcomes.

YG’s Program

The YG’s program taps into the essential talents of students in grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Through interactive workshop settings students learn the foundation skills of creative song writing, rapping, singing, music technology, recording and performance. Students will learn how to write, produce, and record socially relevant Hip Hop lyrics and music and public service announcements (PSA’s) using the latest audio and video technology.

The workshops are facilitated on site at various school locations by Loni Gam Music. Each workshop is 45 minutes in length. Loni Gam Music will provide all audio and video equipment needed for program. The culmination of The YG’s program is a live community performance on that kicked off on June 18, 2016 and a school performance on June 22, 2016.

YG’s Benchmarks

The YG’s program includes a benchmark for success measured through digital storytelling. Students use video technology to tell their story, express expectations for the program, and set goals at the beginning of the program. Then at the end of the program, students re-evaluate their growth and expectations through video technology.

YG’s Student Commitment

Being a YG requires a commitment beyond the ability to perform the music. YG’s are taught personal responsibility and consequences of behavior. Young Gentlemen are required to sign an agreement to commit to Five Tenets designed to reinforce the behaviors necessary to direct them toward positive life outcomes. The tenets of the agreement apply to program participation as well as behavior in school. Respect is the common thread throughout the agreement.

YG’s Pledge

We are young gentlemen

We are powerful

We have potential beyond measures

We are not perfect, but we can be excellent

We will choose our words and actions wisely

We learn from those before us

We will teach those after us

Who are we? YGs!

We are brothers. This means treating one another with kindness and respect. We support each other in all that we do, and when disagreements arise, we address them respectfully. Our goal is to lift each other up and strengthen one another, not to tear anyone down.

We will choose our words and actions thoughtfully. Every YG will take a moment to reflect before speaking or acting. We ask ourselves: Is this appropriate? Is it necessary?

We will show respect to all people. This means acting with kindness and consideration toward everyone, both within the Center and beyond. As Young Gentlemen, we understand we have a reputation to uphold. This includes respecting ourselves by dressing appropriately and practicing good hygiene.

We will demonstrate good manners and sound judgment. A positive attitude is key, along with saying "please" and "thank you" in all situations, regardless of the favor. Good judgment means thinking carefully before acting and seeking help when needed. No one has all the answers, but together we can accomplish amazing things.

Being part of the Young Gentlemen program means carrying ourselves with dignity, not just in school but everywhere we go. When we show respect to others, they are more likely to return that respect, which creates stronger, more supportive relationships. A positive attitude and genuine respect for others can take us far in life.
